Scrambling in German : Extraction into the Mittelfeld

چکیده

German is a language with a relatively free word order. During the last few years considerable efforts have been made in all syntactic frameworks to explain so-called scrambling phenomena. In the following paper, I deal with some tough cases of German word order which cannot be described by assuming flat sentence structures or word order domains. The phenomena discussed are PP complements of nouns and adjectives, which can appear separated from their heads in the German Mittelfeld, and stranded prepositions. The similarity to fronting of these elements is used to explain these phenomena by a generalized version of the head-filler schema used in the standard HPSG framework. Non-local scrambling: the equivalence of TAG and CCG revisited

It is well known that standard TAG cannot deal with certain instances of longdistance scrambling in German (Rambow, 1994). That CCG can deal with many instances of non-local scrambling in languages such as Turkish has previously been observed (e.g. by Hoffman (1995a) and Baldridge (2002)). We show here that CCG can derive German scrambling cases which are problematic for TAG, and give CCG analy...

Scrambling: Nontriggered Chain Formation in OV Languages

In this paper we argue for the following properties of clause-bound scrambling, as they are manifested in German. First, scrambling presupposes head-final projections. Only selected constituents, notably arguments, scramble, the reason being that phrases selected by a head have a unique base order. Second, scrambling involves antecedent-gap dependencies with A-chain properties. Third, scramblin...

Ambiguity in Anaphora

This paper presents novel psycholinguistic evidence on the factors governing pronoun resolution in German. To determine the relative influence of linear order versus grammatical function of potential referents in the German Mittelfeld on pronoun interpretation, an interpretation-preference task was run on 23 German natives. Subjects chose the preferred referent for fully ambiguous personal pron...

Developing a TT-MCTAG for German with an RCG-based Parser

Developing linguistic resources, in particular grammars, is known to be a complex task in itself, because of (amongst others) redundancy and consistency issues. Furthermore some languages can reveal themselves hard to describe because of specific characteristics, e.g. the free word order in German. In this context, we present (i) a framework allowing to describe tree-based grammars, and (ii) an...

A corpus-based analysis of word order variation:

A perennial problem in German syntax is the order of verb arguments in the Mittelfeld. The Mittelfeld is the section of the clause between the two parts of the discontinuous verbal group. In it, all verb arguments can be realized simultaneously, however, not always in the same order. There is a longstanding debate about a number of factors that possibly govern this variation, yet, what their ac...
